Krishna Janmashtami: The spiritual significance of Lord Krishna’s birth

Krishna, the most loved and colourful incarnation of God was born today on Krishna Janmashtami. His birth was exceptional, because of the dramatic circumstances in which it took place.

Kansa, the tyrant ruler of Mathura, vows to kill the sons of his sister Devaki and husband Vasudev, because he comes to know through a Voice from the Sky that Devaki and Vasudev’s son would kill him. He imprisons the couple and mercilessly slaughters their new-borns. In this way, he kills the 7 sons of Devaki. Then finally on midnight of Ashtami, the divine baby Krishna is born in the Kansa’s prison cell. Following the divine instructions of Lord Vishnu, Vasudev is able to take Krishna to safety in Nanda’s house in Gokul. From early infanthood, the all-attractive Bal-Gopal mesmerizes people with his playfulness, his naughtiness, and his loving sweetness. He himself embodies Divine Love and dances joyously through a divine Life, regardless of what is happening around him. Krishna finally kills the cruel Kansa and his associates and liberates Mathura from his tyranny

On Janamashtami, let us dwell on what we can learn from the birth of Krishna Avatar.

In our Life, there is a perpetual war between two opposite forces. One is that of Love and the other is that of Fear. Kansa represents the forces of Fear, which chain you and torment you for 7 births. The 7 births represent the fears of 7 Chakras. At each birth, or Chakra, you find yourself caged and overpowered by the Kansa or fears related to that particular Chakra. At Muladhara, the fear of survival torments you; at Swadhisthan the fear of not being good enough traumatises you; at Manipur the fear of being powerless traps you; at Anahata, the fear of not being loved kills you; at Vishuddha, the fear of comparisons immobilize you; at Ajna the fear of seeing reality impairs you; and finally at Crown Chakra, the fear of acceptance and lack of gratitude paralyses you. Ultimately, the demonic and complex fear forces of Kansa kill you, till you learn the lessons of the 7 Chakras. It is only then that you are able to invoke the Krishna within you. When you are able to open all your Chakras and you become evolved spiritually, emotionally and mentally, then you find Krishna in your heart. When you merge with Krishna in your heart, you know you are the King and your Life becomes a love-song full of Joy and you experience oneness with the entire Creation.

You have to become spiritually evolved enough to see and recognize the fears and ask yourself, whether you should align yourself with the all-loving Krishna inside you, or the fear-symbolizing Kansa. Love itself kills all kinds of Kansa. All fears are destroyed by Love.

Today, on the pious occasion of Janamashtami, realize the loving Krishna within you. Let the Love in your heart blossom. With a heart full of love, a joyful mind and a healthy body, you will realize heaven on earth. Live life playfully, and do not get bogged down by fears. See your fears, your Kansa in the eye, and like Krishna, destroy it with Love.
