Spiritual Significance of Dhanteras and Diwali

Diwali signifies the return of Lord Rama to reclaim His kingdom after 14 years of exile, where he did penance and fought for his Dharma and invoked Hanuman.  In our real life, this is our surrender to our Life purpose or Dharma or True intent, for which we have taken birth.

This return is celebrated by illuminating our environment with light and praying to Laxmi, Ganesh and Saraswati for permanent abode in our lives since they help accomplish our Lakhsya (aim), give us support, stability and the wisdom to follow our path. With this awakening, all your body’s chakras light up in sequence one by one, just like a row of diyas. This is the Kundalini rising.

The grand day of Diwali is preceded by two days spent in removal of ignorance. For as we know, light will be revealed only after ignorance has been banished. Today is Dhanteras, the day when Lord Dhanvantri emerged with his Pot of elixir to heal you and give you the strength in your Kundalini so that you can raise your awareness.

Yamadeepam is when you light 13 lamps filled with Til oil facing the South direction, so that the God of death may never touch you as you walk on the path of Immortality.
